With all the EV chargers on the market now it’s hard to find which one is best for you. Well at Sunpak Electric there’s one option we feel is standing out from the competition and we wanted to take a little time to explain why.
Design
The Emporia charge comes in two color options white and black this doesn’t seem like a big deal but they are one of the only companies to offer this and mean you can install it discreetly in a variety of indoor and outdoor locations. It’s also fairly compact measuring just 12.6 x 9.06 x 3.39 inches (320 x 230 x 86 mm)

It also comes with an additional wall bracket to wrap the charge cord and hold the plug.
Options
The Emporia level 2 charger offers the widest selection of options.
The charger is available with either the CCS/J1772 plug or the NACS(Tesla) plug..
There is also a NEMA 14-50 plug-in option if you already have a 240v outlet in your garage. Note that with this option you can only set the charger up to a 40a charge setting.
OR
You can choose the Hardwire option. This is what we always recommend: you can set the charger up to 48a depending on wire size and the breaker (48a would require a 60a breaker). This is also the safest option as in the past we have seen 14-50 outlets fail.
Emporia has also improved the install process of the hardwired option by now supplying the charger with a pre-installed whip too.
Features
This charger has some great features. For safety it has a built in ground fault interrupter, missing ground detection and surge detection. It will also monitor its own internal temperature and shut off if it reaches over 98c.
With the Emporia app you can really dial in the charger and how you want it to run. Schedule charging, see charging rates and even charge when you are producing excess solar energy. It will even produce a monthly charging report.
The charger comes with a 3-year warranty and their customer service is the best we have experienced.
Two other optional features that really make this charge an amazing option:
Invite to charge– This is a great feature for communal charging at businesses and condo buildings or if you rent your home on Airbnb. Within this online management system, you can limit access, Invite, approve and remove drivers. Control advanced energy management features remotely and download reporting for billing.
Power smart Load Management- This feature is a game changer. When you purchase this option it allows your charger to monitor your current power usage in your home and ramp the charger output up and down to avoid overloading your electrical system. This can be a big issue in old homes with small electrical services or in homes where people are starting to electrify and adding more and more electrical appliances.
All of these options and features add up to making this charger our no. 1 recommended option from an installer and user point of view. It’s also one of the most affordable options out there, starting at just $399.
